Giulia is constantly torn between the need to feel at home and be loved and a wild desire for freedom. Between an illusory desire for motherhood and ways to make ends meet, she spends the hottest days of a torrid Roman summer surrounded by elusive characters with empty lives, yet pure and wonderful like her. A gang of robbers steals thousands of euros in a provincial bar without imagining that the owner of the business is Cagliostro (Tony Sperandeo), a shady individual linked to the criminal underworld. He tracks down the gang of robbers, offering them the opportunity to collaborate with him, by sneaking into the mansion of the elderly Chinese businessman Hung (Hal Yamanouchi), where they will have to steal a green jade pendant for him. In exchange for the success they will be able to keep all the money stolen from the bar, but they will discover that the medallion is around the neck of Hung's daughter, Sofia (Martina Angelucci), in a coma and kept alive through a mysterious ritual. And it is only the beginning of a long night of blood and violence.

The serendipitous encounter of two worlds apart: the travails of a young man, son of the Post-Communist Revolution, who flees his country in search of a better future and the travails of another youth who instead scrapes along the margins of a Western society that is unable to offer gainful employment to so much of its youth. In the background of this rapport between a simple Romanian youth and his marginalized Italian counterpart, there is a West which on one side is still reeling from the collapse of the Communist ideology and on the other, in the clutches of a Capitalist myth which has increasingly assumed, as it propulsive force, harsh competitiveness and an intensification of social inequality.
The story of Padre Pio (1887-1968) from the onset of the stigmata during World War I, when he prayed that soldiers' suffering be his, until his death. The story is told by Emilia, Pio's friend, to a Vatican official reviewing Padre Pio's potential canonization. We watch local people venerate the humble Capuchin monk, we see petty jealousies within the Church almost bring him down, and we experience his decision to build a Home for the Relief of Suffering, a labor of love begun just after World War II. Emilia and her husband Dr. Sanguineti work tirelessly beside the humble but sensible Pio.
