While on election duty in Kannur, veterinary doctor Gautham meets Bhumika, daughter of an aristocratic Communist leader and falls in love with her.
The two prominent families in town, that of Pareil Pappu's (Janardanan) & that of Mampalli Chackappan's (V.K. Sriraman), were always at loggerheads, with most conversations resulting in fisticuffs. Pappu's dreaded nephew Antony (Suresh Gopi) poses a constant headache for Chackappan, but Chackappan's daughter Nimmy (Divya Unni) & Antony fall in love. Chackappan & Pappu forget their differences & unite, but soon after, Pappu is shot dead by a mysterious sniper & Antony sets out to find the killer.
The threesome who lend reason to the title are Aravindan (Jayaram), Chandu (Mukesh) and Joy (Sreenivasan). They value friendship over everything else, even family, and for this reason, Chandu resists the advances of Aravindan's sister Uma (Divya Unni). When the trio take up a painter's job at a mansion, Aravindan falls in love with Padmini (Meena), who lives there and Padmini's jealous cousin makes him believe that his overtures are reciprocated. When the truth is revealed and Padmini rejects him outright, Chandu stands up for his friend and speaks ill of her. This makes her swear to separate the friends.
Diwakaran (Jagadish), a medical sales rep, is also a thief, unbeknown to everyone but his pal Chaandy (Kalabhavan Mani). Mistaking retired school teacher Aravindakshan (Premachandran) for a politician, Diwakaran steals jewelry from him, which Aravindakshan had intended for his daughter's marriage. The cop investigating the case, Jayashankar (Vijayaraghavan), becomes Diwakaran's brother-in-law, to the latter's shock. Jayashankar then brings a proposal for Diwakaran - Aravindakshan's daughter!
